Moving is rarely much fun, whether you are moving from one home to another, or one web/blog platform to another.
This blog is moving, from one platform (Drupal-based), where it’s been for the last three years, to another platform (WordPress-based).
In fact, you are on the new site now!
I decided to bite the bullet, as it were, and make the move for a few reasons:
- To get all my personal “stuff” in one place; for years, I have had the blog, and a personal web site (davidgumpert.com), each on a separate platform.
- To gain more flexibility; almost since I launched The Complete Patient back in 2006, I’ve been constrained in important ways, such as how I can communicate with subscribers, the kinds and amount of linkages I can have to social media, how I can present info about my books, articles, and such.
- To lower costs associated with web site maintenance. Having two separate sites, with two completely different platform capabilities and hosting, means two separate cost centers. Consolidating everything should lower my costs significantly, while increasing flexibility.
Though you will notice a change in the appearance, this shift overall won’t change the blog’s functionality too terribly much, though the comment-posting process will be a little different. There is no need to register to comment, just provide your email.
To have your photo show with your comment, go to http://davidgumpert.com/wp-admin and click the “forgot password” link. Then enter the email you used on TCP and you’ll receive a link to change your password. Once that is done, login at the above address and you’ll be able to enter your avatar photo on your account page. You will never have to login again, unless you want to change your avatar!
In the end, the WordPress platform will make it easier for me to provide information, and easier for you to follow what I am doing.
In the meantime, the most painful part of the entire process has been completed: my entire blog’s data has been moved—including nine years of posts and comments—to the new platform. It continues to be searchable, though there may be some weird looking layouts and duplicates of photos and such on the articles you find.
I want to thank Sally O’Boyle (Whiz for Hire who also writes with Liz Reitzig at Nourishing Liberty) for overseeing all this. And thanks to Andrew Ward of Kalamuna, who has served as blog master for the past three years, and helped me through all manner of technical glitches and challenges.
The transition should be completed over the next two weeks, hopefully with a minimum of noticeable problems. Full speed ahead.
David Gumpert
I’m testing to make sure I’m logged in properly! Nice layout, David.
Thanks, D. Looks like it worked fine. I have to approve the first couple times people comment, but then it happens automatically.
I also was notified through my email and received the current article there, as well as a listing of a few previous articles. Is that a feature now of wordpress? I mean, will that happen with each new article or comment? I have a wordpress account that I never use because I like my forum set-up (which is not the same as a blog, of course) but I didn’t realize it would contact “members” through email. That’s kinda nice. If that really is how it works all the time, it will save me the bother of going to my “favorites” every time I want to log into your blog. Kewl!
David uses MailChimp so you’ll get an email each time he posts a new article. You can also subscribe to comments when you comment. 🙂
I received no notification at all about his newest article. Mailchimp must be failing. And now we’re back to having to type in a code in order to post. Argh.
Give it a chance. The post just went up when you wrote your response. I’ll check further to be sure it goes out.
How would I know that? I had just logged on, too. The new layout doesn’t give a “time posted” like the old site, it only gives the date you posted.
Mailchimp is set to send out at 6am the morning after David posts, so you won’t get an email immediately. You will get one in the am though!
I put the time posted in there 🙂
I hope this new platform allows better searching than the prior one did, particularly of the comments. I always got frustrated trying to find subject matters mentioned in past comments.
Looking forward to better functionality of this new platform.
Lynn, that makes two of us. My sense is that there are more options that are more easily available than with the other site to improve functionality. The advantage of WordPress is that it is so widely used, there are lots of add-ons to make things work better.
Looks good David. Going forward looks like it will be OK. I mostly just read your articles and comments, but sometimes I do ‘chime in.’ Don’t worry about “glitches.” Life is full of them, so as long as I don’t loose this community altogether, I can wait out any bumps along this new path. Thank you for all your hard work on this blog. Marietta Pellicano
Good Morning!
Testing…everything looks good David.
Just testing to see if it accepts my comment. The WordPress sytem is certainly easier for commenters than the old one was.
Looks like it works. Any chance of an EDIT function?
Yep, you should have it now 🙂
If there’s an edit function, it’s not showing up anywhere.
I believe you have to be actually logged in to be able to see/use the edit function. I see it, and in fact just used it.
Yes, it appears you have to be logged in. I guess otherwise anyone could edit anyone else’s comment. Wouldn’t that be chaotic! Also, that’s why under your name is says “Guest” — I was wondering about that. This is a new comment plugin.
David, you know change is hard for some of us who are not the techy types! Good morning!
Great decision about moving, David. I’ve been developing WordPress sites for clients for about 4 years now and always wondered why TCP had been developed on “the dark side”…LOL.
Trust me…you will love WP.
I always needed lots of coffee before venturing into the Drupal admin… oy vey. Yes, love WP.
Congratulations Dave and our best hope.
David, 2006 was a hallmark year for both of us. Life is a fascinating ride.
Yes, and lots of positive trends since then.
Looks good to me too David! I was wondering about an avatar before, and never really looked into it, but now I know with this new platform. Next thing is to find something I want to use.
I was accustomed to the old site background color and to be honest the new one is too white bright. Tone it down please?
Working on that 🙂 I have the same issue on lots of sites so I toned down the brightness button on my computer and ipad. Good interim solution!
btw how did bite the bullet come to be? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bite_the_bullet
I wish I had thought of straw man as an alias, but that would have too many inconstatiuencies since I’m not.
The Logics of Formal Inconsistency (LFIs) are a family of paraconsistent logics where the notions of contradiction and consistency are not coincident; although the validity of the principle of explosion is not accepted for all sentences, it is accepted for consistent sentences. Most paraconsistent logics, as the LFIs, also reject the principle of non-contradiction.
Drupal isn’t that a city in India? My mind wonders sometimes if not always at least in some ways and means nothing
I second and third Tyrannocaster’s motion for an edit function, so I don’t have to cringe at viewing my posts a after typing inconstatiuencies … ahem … inconstituencies
Done! Great new plugin: wpDiscuz
as in continual inconstituencies, not that I would ever be
Would also be nice if you could modify your user name to say change spacings, Or a Moose not that I would just saying
Working on it 🙂 I edited your “nick name” to be Or a Moose but it’s not showing yet. But now everyone will call you Moose instead of Ora…
Thanks Sally, but I’d prefer to keep it Ora so we don’t get anyone confuseded, is that going to be an option to change your screen name? Would be nice if somewhat deceiving if abused. I’m a man and don’t hide it except in public
Lol! You are Ora agin. I see no indication WP will allow change of usernames.
Thanks Sally, I sure am agin aren’t we all you know what they say in the world according to Kermit: Time’s fun when your having flies.
How come we don’t see you post much here? Would love to get your perspective but it’s probably already taken we don’t mind seconds or thirds its a natural progression just like this blog and all else
I’ll be back 🙂
DD, you look good in a mustache! Somebody told me that back in high school and I’ve never shaved it off since though the beard comes and goes with the seasons cold and heat it’s my own personal blanket(:{)
